For the new workplace of a leading international consulting firm in Cologne, ACTINCOMMON designed the coworking space on the 14th floor while also developing a graphic concept for the entire building. The result is a work environment that brings together exchange, orientation and identity. Open spatial structures, flexible ways of using the space and floor-specific graphics create an environment that encourages collaboration and gives the workplace a distinctive character.

Challenge

The aim was to create a spatial and design concept that extended beyond a single area. In addition to designing the coworking space, an overarching system was developed to distinguish the various floors and give each of them its own atmosphere. Cologne’s neighbourhoods provided the ideal conceptual basis, translating local identity into the individual office floors.

How can a large corporate workplace be designed to be functional, flexible and at the same time rooted in its setting?

Process

The starting point was the development of the coworking space on the 14th floor. Different work and lounge zones, modular furniture, integrated media solutions and a variety of seating and working settings support spontaneous interaction, focused work and temporary retreat within an open spatial structure.

Building on this, ACTINCOMMON developed a graphic concept that gives each floor its own distinct character through motifs, typography and colour. Drawing on Cologne’s different neighbourhoods creates identification, improves orientation and visibly anchors the workplace in its local context.

Impact

The new workplace creates a work environment that goes far beyond functional requirements. The coworking space offers space for exchange, focus and flexible use, while the graphic design gives the individual floors a distinct identity. In this way, the project connects international working culture with local character and makes the Cologne workplace tangible in a unique way.
